THE WANDERER

with eyes awashed with blood, the world faded to a long stretch of black. hours, days, weeks — it didn’t matter how much time passed elsewhere, when eddie munson’s gaze cracked through the ichorous crust, he was still trapped on the twisted day when all the strange things in hawkins began.fleeting consciousness due to blood loss had been mistaken for death, but his heart endured through the dark hours alone, left behind but not forgotten. it was a painstaking task to clear the stage of his final stand and drag his torn muscles into the least blighted shelter in the twisted hellscape. eddie rested there for as long as his serrated nerves allowed, waiting for the strength in his legs to return.

as soon as he could bear his own weight again, eddie hobbled his way into hawkins proper and raided the pharmacy. he didn’t let up his guard till he made it to the bathroom, his arms full of tainted supplies, and his own wretched reflection caught him off guard. grey complexion, sunken eyes, beads of milky sweat sliding down his hairline. his abdomen riddled with swollen bites, encrusted by throbbing pustules of infection. thick, frothy strands of viscous foam oozed from fibrous scabs. it’s a horror to behold in the mirror and a nightmare made real as he looked down, seeing it for himself on his body.breaking open a bottle of painkillers proved fruitless. the tablets inside were speckled with rotted seeds. so, rather than ingesting unnecessary risk, eddie took an unclean box cutter he found in the store and began carving away strips of puckered skin. once freed of the built-up decay, he sluiced the ruins with stinging alcohol and a fouled bottle of iodine.

eddie continued this auto-surgical ritual the entire time he remained in the upside down. but he kept his spirits up after recovering his warlock. when the young man wasn’t moving from one hiding spot to the next or scouting for an unclear way home, he filled the solitude with music in his head as he fingered silent songs he had memorized. there was nothing beautiful about the torment, no second of it tasted brave, but the thought of playing his guitar again for real kept his longing strong to see the upside world again.

THE HERO

after being reunited with chrissy ( greenscrunchy ) in the upside down, they emerge together and shelter in wayne’s trailer. after settling his uncle’s disquieting revelation, eddie and chrissy arrive at a hospital engulfed in a deluge of civilians affected by the preternatural quake. once admitted, the pair are swarmed by law enforcement and questions that wittle down to how was chrissy cunningham in the hospital when she was buried six feet underground?having worked out a diluted version of events beforehand, eddie and chrissy recount their story to police. eddie is grilled by investigators but with his unwavering testimony and chrissy still being very much, there was nothing to link the munson boy to the other murders and the attack on maxine mayfield. there was, however, someone who could. someone who was found at two separate crime scenes and intimately linked to chrissy.jason carver.it was jason hawkins police found holding the broken body of patrick mckinney. it was jason they found dead in the creel house alongside a severely beaten lucas sinclair and max mayfield who bore the same injuries as the previous victims. and it was jason who had a motive to harm chrissy if he suspected his girlfriend was getting close with another boy. but how to explain the body found in the munson’s trailer and the seemingly unattached fred benson?in the days following a series of excruciating interviews, hawkins would be shocked by the new working theory presented by the department. chrissy told police she’d feared she was being stalked. worried that family and friends might not believe her or be thrown in harm’s way, she went to eddie who had a reputation she thought might be help. and it was on the night of march 21st when chrissy made the horrifying discovery that she was right.a horribly disfigured man kidnapped her from the munson’s and planted the body of a dead girl he’d been keeping in his truck. eddie, who’d been in his

room, rolled the dead girl over before spotting the still-living chrissy being thrown into an unfamiliar vehicle. not wanting to lose sight of the kidnapper, eddie took off in his van, failing to alert police to the crime.eddie followed the kidnapper to a remote location. he was able to rescue chrissy but they were forced to flee on foot through the wilderness to get back to hawkins. chrissy suffered severe injuries at the hands of her kidnapper and eddie was attacked by pack of unknown animals in the dark, slowing their progress back to hawkins.but what connection did the “disfigured man” have with jason carver? investigators suspected the kidnapper was a thug hired by the affluent carver to punish chrissy for a perceived slight. as for munson, the boys had a longstanding history of no-love-lost thus being charged for murder would be an apt lesson for carver’s high school nemesis.carver’s vigilante crusade was an act to dissuade any suspicion wandering his way. while patrick mckinney must’ve discovered the truth of the team captain’s doings and confronted him. feeling threatened, jason killed patrick and concocted a story that it’d been munson who no other witnesses could corroborate was at the scene.maxine mayfield was eddie’s neighbor and was a partial witness to the kidnapping. being so young, she was intimidated into not speaking for a time, but refused to stay silent when the whole town started to hunt an innocent man. in too deep, carver tried to kill max and almost succeeded if lucas sinclair hadn’t arrived in the nick of time.as for fred benson? the poor boy went to the trailer park as a reporter for his school paper. following his journalistic instinct, he must've discovered something in the woods and was murdered for his trouble.a wild and twisted tale involving predominant names was difficult for the public to swallow. but with chrissy undeniably alive, talking, and adamant that eddie munson’s involvement was impossible, the posthumous speculation of jason’s involvement was the only plausible story hawkins pd now had.eddie’s name was cleared though plenty in hawkin’s uppercrust still believed he was responsible somehow and begrudged him further now that jason

carver’s name was buried in the mud. the rest of town was a variable of shame, uncertainty, and pity after a witch hunt had been so easily triggered against the young man.he was discharged from the hospital before chrissy and returned to school to an uneasy atmosphere. eyes followed him everywhere. not like the way they used to. weeks later chrissy too was welcomed back to hawkins high, albeit with equal parts confusion and fanfare. the school year was extended to account for time lost to the aftermath of the earthquake. that extra time gave chrissy and eddie the chance to get in their heads to take a roadtrip over the summer to celebrate their shared survival and escape the dysphoria hanging over hawkins.with diplomas in hand and the summer heat setting in, the motley pair hit the road in eddie’s recovered van.with the inevitable end of all good things, chrissy and eddie return to hawkins as summer ebbs into fall. after months together on the road and nightmares shared in close proximity, it’s surreal to finally part ways. chrissy leaves for uc berkeley while eddie remains in hawkins, working graveyards with his uncle at the plant while holding on to his part-time at thacher tire.the two thousand mile distance between them proved to be less of a rift and more an invitation to write letters and splurge on biweekly calls. they have a brief reunion when chrissy returns to hawkins for winter break, but it wouldn’t be until the following spring that definitive change stirred again.in the waning days of february, eddie worried how the oncoming anniversary of vecna’s attack would affect chrissy, especially so far from home. his concern festered when his own dreams echoed with the cries of demobats. the flap of wings overhead burned a chill up his spine and turned his veins to a pumping fire. coupled with some gentle prompting from his uncle convinced eddie to pack up his van and head to california. he surprised her in early march, cutting a thirty-four hour trip into twenty-four. but what was intended to be temporary relief on the anniversary of their un-deaths became something more permanent when eddie remained by chrissy's side.
